The Human Element

by Walt Carvalho

Amazing things are happening these days in the digital world.

The last few days online has taken a subject I was planning on discussing this week, and put it on the shelf for another day. I think instead, I’m going to talk about a few things that really exemplify the movement of human bonding in digital space.

First let me say, there are a few people who have resisted starting a facebook account, till recently. Their ability to jump right in and participate has been very cool to witness.

There seems to be a very big movement in school reconnects. I am not only talking about college and high school connections, but also middle school, grammar school and even kindergarten reuniting. Friends share old class photos as well as recent family images. We are speaking with friends again, after being many years and miles apart. They can share and plan not only as individuals, but as groups as well.

Women, the fastest growing group on facebook, are finding new and creative ways to bond and share. They are using their posting power to leave secret messages created within their group, probably laughing, as comments flow and men are left dazed and confused, trying to figure it’s meaning.

Time and distance are becoming irrelevant in maintaining relationships. Parents seem to especially benefit from this scenario, becoming grandparents add to its value. It seems that the growth in the membership of this age group in facebook is due to the fact that, keeping up to date with their children and grandchildren, without the need to travel, has proven extremely beneficial. Unfortunately, there are still many of those for whatever reason, refuse to participate. They will soon realize their loss.

Whether you are giving your opinion on a game you are watching, the TV show you can’t miss or the workout video you just exercised with, there is an audience. Most of this audience will just listen to what you have to say. Some will be moved to comment. It’s the human element that bonds us. It makes sharing easier than ever before.

Get Creative. Get Social.
