Places To Be

by Walt Carvalho

As things evolve so quickly, our daily habits are transforming new technologies and rearranging the potential that each of those technologies hold.

Our increased mobility as social media users have extended way beyond SMS (phone texting). We now leave wall posts and images on facebook as well as tweets from visits to the park.

The online world has become more mobile and with it new ideas continue to rise.

Location based apps have been searching for their dominance in creating meet-up situations as well as reward based visits for their users. Mobile apps such as Foursquare, Gowalla, Loopt, Whrrl and Brightkite are designed to give the user geo-based rewards.

As location based activity grows the apps will grow with it. We could see some apps morph into new needs such as more consumer based while others may be drawn into other needs such as user sharing.

Another area of growth will probably be in exchange. New abilities will arise for commerce as we will see more and more devices such as Square appear into the mix.

We will see more new store fronts appear that consist of nothing more than a laptop or iPhone with devices like square which enable exchange to complete transactions on the spot.

With so many new mobile related devices and apps appearing almost daily we are quick to remember a few years back of the wireless internet service called Ricochet. Ricochet (1994-2001) was a service based device, which enabled an initial phase in remote laptop use by providing mobile internet access. With devices like Ricochet, we slowly found ourselves free from being geo connected to information. We no longer needed to be attached to cables.

All of these mobile micro-blogging and location based apps will continue to grow and morph. Their huge potential is uncertain. They’ll reach a point of convenience, like mobile internet access has. Great achievement like most of technology eventually becomes the norm.

Get Creative. Get Social.
