The Big Picture

by Walt Carvalho

I find myself at times, absorbed by details. It’s not that focusing on the fine points are bad, it’s just that being detail oriented has a tendency to give me a restricted view of the overall plan.

It’s like feeling the dread of having to memorize all those dates in history class. Taken individually, we had to match events with dates, repeating until we could match without reading the answer. Whereas, if we took the same information and placed them in context as a larger perspective, we would see a lot easier how the dates pertain to events as changes took place.

Disabling forces such as fear unfortunately clouds our small picture focus. We can become transfixed on a limited scope as our fear engulfs us, reducing our perspective and limiting our judgment. We need to have the ability to step back and evaluate, not by emotional doubt, but instead by giving ourselves a chance to understand what is really happening and why.

There are strong negative forces present daily in our world today. For some, fear of the unknown, fear of failure or yes, even fear of success, forces some people to restrict their potential and limit their dreams. It is as if their true essence has been derailed as they get drawn into the void.

We are amidst a change, a new way business and people exist. Many will have clenched fists, as they fear the opportunities of communication, as the old ways lose their value. Their hands will hold on to the old, as their focus narrows. There are others, however, who have stepped back from the narrow view, rejecting their fears. They put themselves in the position of seeing the total picture. They are the trailblazers, whose innovation and fearless quest of their dreams will create new products, services and ideas.

In our separation from fear and it’s narrow view, we become free to see opportunity.
